Stats #51: The Ethics of Placebo Controlled Trials
Content: This class will teach you some of the ethical problems associated with the use of a placebo group in a medical research study. This class is useful for anyone who is planning a research study that might need a placebo group.
Teaching strategies: Didactic lectures and small group exercises.
Objectives: In this class you will learn how to:
- identify the various ways in which placebos can be used;
- contrast the perspective of the individual and the community in deciding whether a placebo is appropriate; and
- relate the use of placebos to ethical guidance in the Nuremberg code and the Declaration of Helsinki.
This class should qualify for one (1) hour of IRB Education Credits (IRBECs).
