P.Mean: Statistics webinars (web seminars) (created 2009-09-14).

I offer free statistics webinars (web based seminars), partly because it is fun and partly to help promote my independent consulting business. This page lists the upcoming webinars and information about how to sign up and how to connect to the webinar. This page also includes links to the draft handouts for the webinar and (usually a day or two prior to the webinar) a final version of the handout. If you want to be notified about future webinars, the easiest way is to sign up for my newsletter, The Monthly Mean. Also, you can bookmark this page and check back regularly.

Data entry and data management issues with examples in IBM SPSS. Tuesday, August 24, 11am-noon CDT.

Abstract: This training class will give you a general introduction to data management using IBM SPSS software. This class is useful for anyone who needs to enter or analyze research data. There are three steps that will help you get started with data entry for a research project. First, arrange your data in a rectangular format (one and only one number in each intersection of every row and column). Second, create a name for each column of data and provide documentation on this column such as units of measurement. Third, create codes for categorical data and for missing values. This class will show examples of data entry including the tricky issues associated with data entry of a two by two table and entry of dates. No statistical experience is necessary (explain). No special hardware/software is needed (explain).

Registration: To register, please send an email to mail@pmean.com with the words "August 24 webinar" in the title.

Connection: When you register, you should receive two emails, an introductory email that looks something like this and an email with connection information that looks something like this. If you do not get such these emails, please let me know.

Handouts: Draft handouts for this class are not yet available. The final and official handout should be posted here 24 hours prior to the webinar.

What is a p-value? Tuesday, September 21, 11am-noon CDT.

Abstract: The P-value is the fundamental tools used in most inferential data analyses. It is possibly the most commonly reported statistics in the medical literature. Unfortunately, p-values are subject to frequent misinterpretations. In this presentation, you will learn the proper interpretation of p-values, and the common abuses and misconceptions about this statistic. Note: although this webinar is being presented in sequence with two others, there is no required order. These webinars all relate to the same area, but you can register for any one of these webinars separately.

Registration: To register, please send an email to mail@pmean.com with the words "September 21 webinar" in the title.

Connection: Information about how to connect will be provided soon.

Handouts: The handout is not available yet. Here is a handout from an earlier webinar that will give you some idea about the topic. The material on p-values will be expanded and the material on confidence intervals and Bayesian inference will be moved to separate talks.

What is a confidence interval? Wednesday, September 22, 11am-noon CDT.

General instructions

If I am doing my job well, you should get an introductory message that looks something like this:

You should also get a reminder message a day or two before the webinar that looks something like this:

If you are worried about hardware requirements, don't worry too much. Here are the details.

If you are not getting the information you need, check on this page and/or send me an email.
