Stats #75: Open-access journals and their impact on research and the practice of medicine

Content: This training class will explain what open-access publishing is and discuss how it is changing the nature of research and the practice of medicine.

Abstract: Although there is no formal definition of an open-access (OA) journal, the most definition contains two elements. First, an OA journal is available in a digital form on the Internet without any charges for access. Second, an OA journal grants very broad rights to copy and distribute this information. In this seminar, I will trace some of the historical roots of the OA movement, describe the competing economic interested behind OA publishing and commercial publishing, and discuss the impact of OA publishing on research and the practice of medicine.
