It is never a good idea to totally rely on the default options provided by statistical software like SPSS. You should use the defaults as a starting point, and the choice made by the software are typically good ones. There is, however, value in exploring alternatives to the defaults, especially for graphics. Here's an example of a graph you might start with in a linear regression model and some of the changes from default that you might consider.
